Prelude: We Cannot Measure How You Heal

Scottish melody

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 38]

O Lord, all our longing is known to you; our sighing is not hidden from you.

For we are ready to fall, and our pain is ever with us.

It is for you, O LORD, that we wait; it is you, O Lord our God, who will answer.

Do not forsake us, O LORD; our God, do not be far from us; make haste to help us, O Lord, our salvation.

Let us worship the LORD!

Sing Praise to God (Hymn 483)

Schütz/Bohemian Brethren’s Kirchengesang

Sing praise to God, who reigns above, the God of all creation,
The God of power, the God of love, the God of our salvation;
With healing balm my soul is filled, and every faithless murmur stilled;
To God all praise and glory!

The Lord is never far away, but through all grief distressing,
An ever present help and stay, our peace, and joy, and blessing;
As with a mother’s tender hand, God gently leads the chosen band:
To God all praise and glory!

Thus all my gladsome way along, I sing aloud Thy praises,
That all may hear the grateful song my voice unwearied raises.
Be joyful in the Lord, my heart, both soul and body take your part:
To God all praise and glory!

Confession

God who hears our lament, we cry out for healing and wholeness but do not always find them. We know that you care about us and are not indifferent to the brokenness in our bodies, minds, or communities. Forgive us when we struggle to hold onto faith in the midst of pain and fear. Forgive us when we grow weary of doing what is right to help others in a world that seems so full of suffering. Renew us and help us trust your love and faithfulness. Amen.

Just As I Am (Hymn 370)

Elliott/Bradbury

Just as I am, without one plea but that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou biddest me come to Thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Just as I am, Thou will receive, will welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Forgiveness in Jesus Christ

Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Response: There Is a Balm in Gilead (Hymn 394)

African-American spiritual

Refrain:
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole.
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.

Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain,
But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again. (refrain)

Don’t ever feel discouraged, for Jesus is your friend,
And if you lack for knowledge He’ll not refuse to lend. (refrain)

If you cannot preach like Peter, if you cannot pray like Paul,
You can tell the love of Jesus and say, “He died for all.” (refrain)

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Call to Stewardship

Ruth Seignemartin

Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy. -Proverbs 31:8-9

Sending: It Is Well with My Soul

Spafford/Bliss

When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll,
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Refrain:
It is well (it is well) with my soul (with my soul)
It is well; it is well with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed his own blood for my soul.
(refrain)

Lord, hasten the day when our faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
The trumpet shall sound and the Lord shall descend;
Even so it is well with my soul.
(refrain)
