Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 16]

Protect us, O God, for in you we take refuge. We say to the LORD,

“You are our Lord; we have no good apart from you.”

We bless the Lord who gives us counsel; we keep the Lord always before us.

Because he is at our right hand, we shall not be moved.

You show us the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy.

Let us worship the LORD!

All Creatures of Our God and King (Hymn 455)

Franicis of Assisi/Geistliche Kirchengesang

All creatures of our God and King,
Lift up your voice and with us sing, Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thou burning sun with golden beam, thou silver moon with softer gleam,
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

And everyone of tender heart, forgiving others, take your part.
O sing ye! Alleluia! Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,
Praise God and cast on God your care!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

All creatures, your Creator bless, and worship God in humbleness.
O sing ye! Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
And praise the Spirit, Three in One!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Confession

Jesus our Teacher, we seek your guidance on what should take priority in our lives, and you call us to love. However, sometimes we fear the vulnerability of offering love and not knowing whether it will be received. Forgive us when we act out of hurt and self-protectiveness more than self-giving. Forgive us when we hold back parts of ourselves from you and skirt the edges of deeper commitment. Comfort us when we meet rejection, and lead us deeper into your way of compassion and kindness. Amen.

What a Friend We Have in Jesus (Hymn 403)

Scriven/Converse

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged: take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer!

Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge – take it to the Lord in prayer!
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee, thou wilt find a solace there.

Forgiveness in Jesus Christ

Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Doxology (Hymn 592)

Ken/Genevan Psalter

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise God, all creatures here below;
Praise God above, ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Scripture Reading

Mark 12:28-33

Sermon: Love Hurts

Dick Silk

Focus: Love is the most important gift from God and that we give to others. But sometimes it hurts when we love and it's not accepted like we hope or even rejected.

Response: Though I May Speak (Hymn 335)

Hopson/English folk melody

Though I may speak with bravest fire, and have the gift to all inspire,
And have not love, my words are vain; as sounding brass, and hopeless gain.

Though I may give all I possess, and striving so my love profess,
But not be given by love within, the profit soon turns strangely thin.

Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control, our spirits long to be made whole.
Let inward love guide every deed; by this we worship and are freed.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Call to Stewardship

Ruth Seignemartin

For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. -Jeremiah 29:11

Sending: Jesus Loves Me! (Hymn 304)

Warner/Bradbury

Jesus loves me this I know, for the bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong, they are weak but He is strong!

Chorus:
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! This I know, as He loved so long ago,
Taking children on His knee, saying, “Let them come to Me.”
(Chorus)

Jesus, take this heart of mine, make it pure and wholly Thine,
On the cross You died for me, I will try to live for Thee.
