Prelude: Pastorale

Bach

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 92]

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High.

We declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night,

to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. For you, O Lord, have made us glad by your work; at the works of your hands we sing for joy.

How great are your works, O LORD, and how deep your thoughts!

Let us worship the LORD!

The God of Abraham Praise (Hymn 488)

Daniel ben Judah/Hebrew melody

The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above;
The ancient of eternal days, the God of love!
The Lord, the great I Am, by earth and heaven confessed,
We bow before your holy name, forever blest.

Your spirit still flows free, high surging where it will;
In prophet’s word you spoke of old and you speak still.
Established is your law, and changeless it shall stand,
Deep writ upon the human heart by your strong hand.

You have eternal life implanted in the soul;
Your love shall be our strength and stay, while ages roll,
We praise you, living God! We praise your holy name;
The first, the last, beyond all thought, and still the same!

Confession

Covenantal God, you have chosen us as your people, and you are faithful to us. In response, we are to love you with all our heart, soul, and might. Forgive us when we compartmentalize our lives into areas that are affected by your teaching, and areas that are not. Forgive us when we give you only pieces of ourselves, or the time we have left over. Forgive us for the times our priorities and ambitions come from other things than love. Help us surround ourselves with your words, that your law of love may permeate everything we do. Amen.

Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me (Hymn 366)

Gerhardt/Hemy

Jesus, Thy boundless love to me no thought can reach, no tongue declare;
O knit my thankful heart to Thee, and reign without a rival there!
Thine wholly, Thine alone, I’d live, myself to Thee entirely give.

O grant that nothing in my soul may dwell, but Thy pure love alone;
O may Thy love possess me whole, my joy, my treasure, and my crown!
All coldness from my heart remove; may every act, word, thought be love.

Forgiveness in Jesus Christ

Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Doxology (Hymn 592)

Ken/Genevan Psalter

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise God, all creatures here below;
Praise God above, ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Take Thou Our Minds, Dear Lord (Hymn 392)

Foulkes/Laufer

Take Thou our minds, dear Lord, we humbly pray;
Give us the mind of Christ each passing day;
Teach us to know the truth that sets us free;
Grant us in all our thoughts to honor Thee.

Take Thou our hearts, O Christ, they are Thine own;
Come Thou within our souls and claim Thy throne;
Help us to shed abroad Thy deathless love;
Use us to make the earth like heaven above.

Take Thou ourselves, O Lord, heart, mind, and will;
Through our surrendered souls Thy plans fulfill.
We yield ourselves to Thee– time, talents, all;
We hear, and henceforth heed, Thy sovereign call.

Sermon: Love Fulfills the Law

Scott Starbuck

Theme: Love as the heart of covenant life

Response: Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love (Hymn 367)

Ghanaian folk song

Refrain:
Jesu, Jesu, fill us with Your love,
Show us how to serve the neighbors we have from You.

Kneels at the feet of His friends,
Silently washes their feet,
Master who acts as a slave to them. (refrain)

Neighbors are rich and poor,
Varied in color and race,
Neighbors are near to us and You. (refrain)

These are the ones we should serve,
These are the ones we should love.
All– are neighbors to us and You. (refrain)

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Call to Stewardship

Ruth Seignemartin

If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. -Psalm 130:3-4, 7

Sending: Lord, Make Us More Holy

African-American spiritual

Lord, make us more holy; Lord, make us more holy;
Lord, make us more holy, until we meet again:
Holy, holy, holy, until we meet again.

Lord, make us more loving; Lord, make us more loving;
Lord, make us more loving; until we meet again:
Loving, loving, loving, until we meet again.

Lord, make us more patient; Lord, make us more patient;
Lord, make us more patient; until we meet again:
Patient, patient, patient, until we meet again.

Lord, make us more faithful; Lord, make us more faithful;
Lord, make us more faithful; until we meet again:
Faithful, faithful, faithful, until we meet again.
