Prelude: When Jesus Came to Jordan (Hymn 72)

Mehrtens

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 29, Luke 3:21-22]

The voice of God resounds upon the water.

The Spirit of the Lord hovers over the stream.

The Son of God is named, “Beloved.”

And all who worship shout out, “Glory!”

Ascribe to the Lord majesty and strength.

Let us worship God in holy splendor.

Let us worship the LORD!

Baptized in Water (Hymn 492)

Saward/Gaelic melody

Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, cleansed by the blood of Christ, our King;
Heirs of salvation, trusting the promise, faithfully now God’s praises we sing.

Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, dead in the tomb with Christ, our King;
One with His rising, freed and forgiven, thankfully now God’s praises we sing.

Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, marked with the sign of Christ, our King;
Born of the Spirit, we are God’s children, joyfully now God’s praises we sing.

Confession

Merciful God, in baptism you promise forgiveness and new life, making us part of the body of Christ. Forgive us when we hold ourselves separate from sisters and brothers in Christ, especially those from other nations or generations. Forgive us when we fail to listen to your voice. God who gives breath and spirit to all of creation, help us pay attention to the many ways and places you are at work for peace. As your beloved children, may we join in doing good. Amen.

Restore in Us, O God

Daw/Hopson

Restore in us, O God, the splendor of your love;
Renew your image in our hearts, and all our sins remove.

O Spirit, wake in us the wonder of your power;
From fruitless fear unfurl our lives like spring-time bud and flower.

Bring us, O Christ to share the fullness of your joy;
Baptize us in the risen life that death cannot destroy.

Forgiveness in Jesus Christ

Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

O God of Love, O God of Peace (Hymn 295)

Baker/Cantica Spiritualia

O God of love, O God of peace, make wars throughout the world to cease;
The wrath of nations now restrain: give peace, O God, give peace again!

Remember, Lord, Thy works of old, the wonders that Thy people told;
Remember not our sins’ deep stain, give peace, O God, give peace again!

Whom shall we trust but Thee, O Lord? Where rest but on Thy faithful word?
None ever called on Thee in vain: give peace, O God, give peace again!

Where saints and angels dwell above, all hearts are knit in holy love;
O bind us in that heavenly chain: give peace, O God, give peace again!

Response: Come, Live in the Light

Haas

Come! Live in the Light! Shine with the joy and the love of the Lord!
We are called to be light for the kingdom, to live in the freedom of the city of God.

Refrain:
We are called to act with justice; we are called to love tenderly;
We are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God.

Come! Open your heart! Show your mercy to all those in fear!
We are called to be hope for the hopeless so hatred and violence will be no more.
(Refrain)

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Call to Stewardship

Those who despise their neighbors are sinners, but happy are those who are kind to the poor.

Give

Sending: O God of Earth and Altar (Hymn 291)

Chesterton/Huber/Welsh folk melody

O God of earth and altar, bow down and hear our cry;
Our earthly rulers falter, our people drift and die;
The walls of gold entomb us, the swords of scorn divide;
Take not your thunder from us, but take away our pride.

From all that terror teaches, from lies of pen and voice,
From all the easy speeches that make our hearts rejoice,
From sale and profanation of honor and the sword,
From sleep and from damnation, deliver us, good Lord!

Awaken us to action and forge us into one,
Defying sect and faction; O God, your will be done!
Oppressive systems snare us; our apathies increase.
Great God, in mercy spare us for justice and for peace!
