Prelude:  Kairos, from “Time”

Francik

Leonard Byrne, tuba

Helen and Leonard Byrne commissioned Spokane composer Margaret Francik to write a piece for tuba and organ. Margaret writes:

“Time has rarely felt more relevant than after 2020 and the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdowns, wherein there was both an abundance of time and a keen desire for the weeks and months to pass more quickly. This piece is an exploration of the holiness and often surprising accompaniment we find in both Chronos, chronological time, and Kairos, moments out of time when God is felt to be in the fabric of the moment.”

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 14]

The Lord looks down from heaven on humankind to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God.

They have all gone astray, there is no one who does good, no, not one.

O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion!

When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people, Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.

Let us worship the LORD!

I Will Praise Your Name

Reese

God, be my help. Lord, be my savior. Guard me with grace and pow’r.

Keep me from harm, show me your favor. Lord, hear my prayer.

(Chorus)

The Lord is my help. God is the giver of my life.

He will deliver from my grief and shame.

I will praise your name. God is the giver of my life.

He will deliver from my grief and shame.

I will praise your name.

Trouble will come, foes will beset me. Danger will seek my life.

When I am weak, do not forget me. Lord, hear my prayer.

(chorus)

Lord, I will give, I will surrender. I will exalt your name.

Guide me in truth, I will remember. Lord, hear my prayer.

(chorus)

Psalm 54

Confession

God of grace, we dare to confess our sin to you because you welcome us as we are. Forgive us when we have gained benefits or privilege at the expense of others, and teach us to make amends. We would be fools to ignore your presence in our lives and your care for the vulnerable. You are our source of life and our hope for change in difficult situations. Grow in us a deeper desire to love you with all that we are and to work for justice in the world. Amen.

Song of Gratitude:  Be Thou My Vision

Trad. Irish Hymn, c. 8th cent; Trad. Irish melody

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

Nought be all else to me, save that Thou art.

Thou my best thought, by day or by night,

Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise,

Thou mine inheritance, now and always:

Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,

High King of Heaven, my treasure Thou art.

Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word;

I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Holy Spirit, Truth Divine

Wilson/McFadyen

Holy Spirit, truth divine, dawn upon this soul of mine;

Word of God and inward light, wake my spirit, clear my sight.

Holy Spirit, love divine, glow within this heart of mine.

Kindle every high desire, perish self in Thy pure fire.

Holy Spirit, power divine, fill and nerve this will of mine;

By Thee may I strongly live, bravely bear, and nobly strive.

Holy Spirit, right divine, make my conscience wholly Thine;

Be my law, and I shall be firmly bound, forever free.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Prelude:  Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us

Bradbury/Wood

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 89]

We will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; with our mouth we will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.

We declare that your steadfast love is established forever; your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.

You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them.

The heavens are yours, the earth also is yours; the world and all that is in it.

Let us worship the LORD!

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (Hymn 376)

Prichard/Wesley

Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heaven to earth come down,

Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, all Thy faithful mercies crown!

Jesus, Thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love Thou art;

Visit us with Thy salvation, enter every trembling heart.

Come, Almighty to deliver, let us all Thy life receive;

Suddenly return, and never, nevermore Thy temples leave.

Thee we would be always blessing, serve Thee as Thy hosts above;

Pray, and praise Thee without ceasing, glory in Thy perfect love.

Finish, then, Thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be;

Let us see Thy great salvation perfectly restored in Thee;

Changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place,

Till we cast our crowns before Thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise.

Confession

Jesus, even you and your disciples became tired and needed rest sometimes. When you went away, the crowds followed. Even then, you had compassion for them. Forgive us when we see the needy in our lives as annoyances or hindrances to our need for rest and rejuvenation.  Encourage us to remember that the teachings of Jesus are meant to feed and heal our souls. Help us recognize when we are weary and find time for refreshment without closing ourselves to compassion for others.  Amen.

Song of Gratitude:  Thy Word

Grant/Smith

(Chorus)

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. (repeat)

When I feel afraid, and I think I’ve lost my way,

Still You’re there right beside me.

Nothing will I fear as long as You are near.

Please be near me to the end. (Repeat Chorus)

I will not forget Your love for me, and yet

my heart forever is wandering.

Jesus, be my guide and hold me to Your side,

I will love You to the end. (Repeat Chorus)

Open Your Ears, O Faithful People

Hasidic melody/Jabusch

Open your ears, O faithful people; open your ears and hear God’s word.

Open your hearts, O royal priesthood; God has come to you.

Chorus:

God has spoken to the people, hallelujah!

God has spoken words of wisdom, hallelujah!

God has spoken to the people, hallelujah!

God has spoken words of wisdom, hallelujah!

They who have ears to hear the message, they who have ears, now let them hear;

They would learn the way of wisdom, let them hear God’s word.  (Chorus)
